Ninebark
Physocarpus opulifolius
Family Rosaceae

Ninebark is the native that out-toughs the exotics: arching five-to-ten-foot wands of burgundy, copper, or gold foliage, white flower clusters bees mob in late spring, and hardiness to forty below. When winter strips it bare, the branches peel in cinnamon layers — the ninth act.
Prairie-tough roots mean drought simply doesn't register, and it's safe around pets — a rare combination with foliage this dark and dramatic. Modern compact cultivars fit foundation beds without the old mildew troubles. Where you'd have settled for a purple-leaf exotic, plant the homegrown one instead.

Questions
Ninebark questions, answered straight.
Is ninebark safe for kids and pets?
Ninebark is commonly eaten and isn't considered toxic, but "commonly eaten" isn't a guarantee for any particular person or animal — allergies, quantity, and which part you eat all matter. Never eat a plant you haven't positively identified, and check with a vet before letting pets or livestock graze anything new.
How do you propagate ninebark?
Seed (stratify), cuttings, or layering.
