Gardenia
Gardenia jasminoides
Family Rubiaceae

One gardenia in bloom can perfume an entire room — that legendary creamy-white fragrance is the whole reason this shrub has been loved for centuries. The flowers open waxy and ivory against deep glossy evergreen leaves, spring into summer, and a few cut blooms floated in a bowl scent the house for days.
Southern gardens grow it as a 3-to-6-foot shrub in zones 7-11; everywhere else it thrives in a pot by a bright window, blooming indoors like a houseplant with a perfume counter's job. It has a diva reputation, richly earned — but one open flower settles the argument. Keep it away from curious pets and give it the bright spot it wants.
