Your Dahlias Come Back Every Spring When You Store Them in These

A tuber sealed in plastic sweats, and a sweating tuber is a rotting one - the classic January heartbreak is opening a sealed bucket of mush that was a prize dahlia. Mesh bags hold each variety separate with full airflow, hang from basement rafters out of mouse reach, and cost almost nothing.

Onion sacks and old pillowcases do the same job the same way.

Naked tubers in dry basement air shrivel; packed in anything damp they rot. Vermiculite buffers both ways - it wicks excess moisture off the tubers and gives a little back as they dry - which is why it is the classic packing for crates of dahlias holding at fifty degrees.

Barely-damp wood shavings or peat work too; the medium should feel almost dry.

Every stored clump looks identical in March, and paper labels tossed in the crate rot with the first humidity. A metal tag wired to each clump at digging - written while the flower is still fresh in memory - is the only reason next year's garden has names. Pencil on metal outlasts everything.

Tag at DIGGING, in the bed - the memory does not survive the wheelbarrow trip.

Dividing tubers leaves cut faces, and cut faces in three months of storage are where rot starts. A dusting of plain garden sulfur on every cut and bruise dries the wound and holds fungus off - the same tin dusts the spring garden against mildew, so nothing is bought for one job.

Dust after the cut surfaces have air-dried a day, not onto wet flesh.

Dahlia collections grow - that is a warning - and grocery boxes of tubers collapse into an unstackable heap by February. Ventilated crates stack a whole collection in a closet footprint with air moving through every layer, and come spring they walk straight out to the beds as carrying trays.

Check everything monthly: one soft tuber culled early saves its whole crate.
